TEGA CAY, S.C. -- Water company officials now believe that vandalism was the cause of a sewage spill in Tega Cay last weekend.

The raw sewage was bubbling up out of a manhole just above Torrence Cove on Lake Wylie.

In a statement, Utilities, Inc. -- the parent company of Tega Cay Water Service -- said the leak appeared to be intentional.

The company supplied a photo of part of a log that it said crews had removed from the sewer pipe.

The company said the log was so large that the only way it could have gotten into the sewer line was if someone opened a manhole and dropped it in.

Amy Massey, a Tega Cay resident, wasn't buying it.

"Do you want to know the truth? I think it is a bunch of baloney," she said.

Neighbors have complained for years about the service the company provides but another resident, Jim Emerson, said he did not believe anyone would intentionally damage equipment.

"It doesn't make sense to me that that is the way it would happen," Emerson said.

To try to prevent something like this from happening again in the future, Tom Oakley of Utilities, Inc. said in a statement, "We will be evaluating the need for additional security at some manhole sites and a full range of options for how to accomplish it, if necessary."

Neighbors said this is the fourth spill just since the first of the year and they just can't believe the spill is the result of someone who would endanger the quality of the lake.

"Their maintenance is pretty sad around here and I think that for them to say that is pretty low," said Massey.

The company is asking area residents to keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity they might see around company equipment.
