CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A small school is hoping to hit it big through a contest on Facebook.
Every day, students, employees and volunteers are searching for votes in the "Kohl's Cares for Kids Giveback" contest.
You can call Charlotte Jewish Day School the "little school that could" with its 110 students.
You could also call it the little school that "is" with all the work it's doing to try to win up to $500,000.
"It's called determination and willpower," said School Director Mariashi Groner.
The school is part of a Facebook contest where the top 20 vote-getting schools win cash.
As of Wednesday, Charlotte Jewish Day School, up against much larger public and private schools across the country, is in 10th place with more than 85,000 Facebook votes.
Groner says students and staff need building, curriculum, playground and technology upgrades. Teacher laptops, for example, are seven years old.
"We're a small school and can use all the help we can get. It's tough economic times and we live off of contributions," Groner said.
Since the money is tied to Facebook votes, signs asking for votes are everywhere.
Teachers, students, volunteers and alumni are going laptop to laptop, store to store and door to door hoping the little school wins big money.
"I've seen determination I've never seen before and I am overwhelmed," Groner said.
Voting ends Sept. 3. The school has already held one "vote-a-thon" and plans to hold another Friday.
