CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old dead in front of his house in east Mecklenburg County.

Police identified the teen as Kydaryune Curry, called “KC” by his friends.

Witnesses told police Curry and a friend were working on his car in front of his house on Northgate Trail Drive off Reedy Creek Road, when the friend went inside for more tools.

A red SUV with “multiple” people inside drove by and someone fired shots, killing Curry, said police Captain Chuck Henson.

Neighbors who have watched the young man grow up said they couldn’t believe this happened in their neighborhood.

“My daughter is the same age as him so they're always at our house,” said neighbor Ron Davis. “I'm talking to this kid last week in my home, saying ‘What are you going to school for?’ .. and to see this, it's just...”

His voice trails off.

Davis said he always felt like a father to Curry, who was the son of a single mom.  When Davis first heard the gunfire – four or five shots – he said he thought it was firecrackers. Then he knew it wasn’t.

He walked up the street and saw Curry lying near his car.

“I'm saying to myself..  it can't be my man, it can’t be.. it just can’t be,” he said, choking up a little. “I’d just talked to him about college -- it just can't be my man, and sure enough…”

His voice trailed off again.

"It's just hard, it’s very confusing, lot of questions," said Lynda Mackey as she stood outside looking at the spot where her son's friend died.  "There's this big part of me that is thankful that my son's okay...which makes me scared that it could have been him.  K.C. is like a second son to me."

Police were still looking for the red SUV Monday night.  If you have any information, they ask you to call 704-432-TIPS to speak directly to a homicide detective.  Detective Brewington is the lead detective assigned to the case.
