KANNAPOLIS, NC--NewsChannel 36 has learned a train hit and killed two people in Rowan County. The two victims were residents of the Britthaven Rest Home in Kannapolis.
The accident happened just before 6 p.m. Friday on E. 18th Street at N. Main Street in Kannapolis.
Britthaven released this statement to Newschannel 36:
"Residents and staff of our Rest Home are deeply saddened by the tragic accident. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families as a result of this accident. Facility counseling support will be available for our Residents, families and staff as we deal with this terrible event. Rest Homes strive to support a home like environment and the rights of competent residents to leave the facility at will. Our facility has not experienced a loss of life in an outside accident. "We will continue to work with community resources for the safety of all our residents."
Amtrak officials say Train #76 was traveling from Charlotte to Raleigh when it hit two people walking on the track. One hundred passengers were on the train, but no one was hurt.
That train did continue on to its destination.
