CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two men are in custody after a deadly shooting at a University area apartment complex Thursday night.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Coleville Apartments on Arlyn Circle near the University of North Carolina-Charlotte campus.
Police tell NewsChannel 36 that Jonathan Nelson, 18, was shot and transported by his cousin to Carolinas Medical Center-University, where he was pronounced dead.
The cousin told officers that he and Nelson were sitting in a car when they were approached by two men in ski masks armed with a handgun, according to police. He said that the men tried to rob them and then opened fire, hitting his cousin.
Police say an off-duty officer at the apartment complex at the time of the shooting heard what he thought was glass breaking and put out a call for service. Minutes later officers spotted a car driving erratically with its light off near the crime scene, police say. Officers pulled the car over and, after questioning them, took the two occupants into custody.
The suspects, Jerry Fewell, 29, and Tahashi Matthews, 33, face several charged. Fewell is charged with murder and two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Matthews is charged with murder and two counts of tobbery with a dangerous weapon.
