CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. – A driver transporting U.S. mail in a Davenport Transportation tractor trailer died after an early morning accident on Highway 321.
That driver has been identified as Harley James Stanley, 46, from Longdale.
Stanley's truck broke down near mile marker 41, so he called for another truck.
When that driver arrived, the two switched cabs on the tractor trailers, but when they tried to pull away, the cab came apart.
Stanley was struck by another tractor trailer while trying to reattach the trailer to his cab.
The driver of that truck said he didn't see Stanley because of the fog.
Police shut down that section of the highway for about four hours while they investigated the accident.
Officials say the driver who hit Stanley won't be charged.
