ALEXIS, N.C. -- A tearful prayer service and vigil was held Monday night in Alexis, near where two young cousins were killed when a dirt hole they were playing in collapsed Sunday evening.

Pastor Ritchie Doss led the service at the Adventure in Faith Church, where the tragedy seemed to touch everyone in the congregation.

Darrell Buchanon is married to a cousin of the family that lost 7-year-old James Caldwell and 6-year-old Chloe Jade Arwood.

"I had James in my Sunday school.  I was his teacher.  My wife was Chloe's social director," said Buchanon as he fought back tears.

The pastor said everyone in the congregation was in mourning.

"Anybody who is married and has children, we are all the same," he said.

For those who came to offer prayers, it was hard to understand why this tragedy had taken two lives that were so young.

"Right now what the family needs is a lot of prayers because that is what is going to get them through this," said Buchanon.
