LAKE NORMAN, N.C.-- Thousands will take to the lakes this Labor Day weekend, and many will adhere to the rules of the waters.

But for those who don't, they might have to contend with officers like Kyle Voris of the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission.

Voris has paroled waters like Lake Norman for more than 15 years.

"I seen just about all everything you can think of out here on this lake," says Voris.

Voris said that holiday and long weekends always causes more concerns for boating safety, but he adds this year has been a lot better in terms of people violating the waters laws.

"We try and concentrate on impaired driving, the safety violations, any kind of safety violation, anybody operating a boat, a personal watercraft in a negligent manner," says Voris.

Voris says he also conducts routine safety checks to make sure boaters have the right amount of life vests and working fire extinguishers on board their boats.

Voris said it's easy to have a careful day at the lake.

"Just keep the alcohol to a minimum. Have a designated driver if possible... That makes our job a lot easier," he says.
