CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An east Charlotte woman is recovering after being shot in the face after trying to stop someone from breaking into her car.
A neighbor at the Aztec apartments on Eastway Drive told NewsChannel 36 she heard a car alarm go off early Sunday morning, then stop. Then the alarm sounded again – and then the neighbor heard two gunshots.
Police said someone broke into the gunshot victim’s car and stole a stereo around 3:40 a.m., before shooting her and leaving in another car.
Police did not identify the victim but a police report says she had a serious, but non-life-threatening injury from at least one gunshot wound. The report lists a second victim who was threatened by the gunman, but not hurt, and says as many as three guns may have been involved.
Another woman visiting the apartments Sunday afternoon said a bullet went through the wall of the victim’s apartment and into a bedroom where her 12-year-old nephew usually sleeps. Nancy Newsome said she was glad he wasn’t home at the time.
Newsome doesn’t understand why someone would shoot at another person over such a petty crime.
"Everyone needs to be able to live and feel safe. Now we don't,” said Newsome. “Who's going to go to sleep tonight? And who's going to have a good night's sleep? Not me! Not them.. and all because somebody else doesn't want to work for a living? They want to take from somebody else because they just think they can?”
Police are looking for a tan, older model Ford SUV like an Explorer or an Expedition. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
