CHARLOTTE, NC -- As Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students returned to class Monday, commuters are being reminded to use caution near local schools. Police officers are posted outside many schools, but it’s often a  school's crossing guard on the front line.

"The traffic's pretty heavy," said Ronald Green, crossing guard at Rama Road Elementary School.

Green says drivers need to slow down.

NBC Charlotte tested out drivers in front of three local schools.

Drivers were monitored going up to 20 miles an hour above the posted school zone speed limit at Rama.

Across town at Collinswood Language Academy drivers were going more than 15 miles an hour above the speed limit.

In front of Alexander Graham Middle School, drivers only exceeded the speed limit by a few miles an hour.

Green says it's a problem at most schools.

"Adults are trying to get to work, and provide for their families, things of that nature."
