CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cam Newton is known for his uniform on the playing field, but it's his uniform off the field that really has people buzzing. NBC Charlotte got a special look behind the scenes at how Cam’s new clothing line comes together.
Before it hits the store shelves, Cam's clothing line, Made, starts in the basement of Belk's headquarters, behind closed doors.
John Thomas is the vice president of private brands for Belk, and leads a team of designers that work closely with the Panthers’ quarterback on the new line.
“Cam approached us and said he was interested in doing a partnership with Belk.”
The Charlotte-based company liked the idea of partnering with the young quarterback, in part because athletes are the latest fashion trendsetters.
Thomas said, “They all come to these press conferences decked out. I think we started noticing it last year in the NFL-- a lot of these guys showing up in press conferences in suits.”
But Cam's pretty busy playing ball.
“He’s gone out of his way to say he's not a designer,” Thomas said.
So Cam gives the Belk team some ideas, and they come back to him to get a “yes” or “no”.
“Yeah and he gives a lot of input,” the VP of Private Brands says. “He’s got a very clear sense and point of view.”
The inspiration for the line? Cam’s mom.
“He wanted to make looking nice, looking pulled together, cool. He talked a lot about his family because his mom always challenged him to always look nice.”
The idea board for the upcoming fall collection shows European influences and a spattering of blue. Because, Thomas says, there will always be some Carolina blue and, of course, some Panthers blue, in everything they do.
So, what's next for the line? Jeans will be in stores shortly. Shoes, socks, and pocket squares are in the works.
