CARY, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities evacuated a Cary shopping center after a truck spilled hundreds of gallons of lye in the parking lot.
Town spokeswoman Susan Moran said the truck was making a delivery to a hardware store at the shopping center when the lye began leaking from the truck. Moran said from between 200 and 300 gallons may have spilled from the truck.
Officials say the chemical did not get into any water sources.
Moran said the truck driver discovered the leak and was taken to the hospital after coming in contact with the sodium hydroxide, which is a corrosive material that can cause chemical burns to skin and blindness if it comes in contact with eyes.
