CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The owner of a Charleston-area restaurant has been sentenced to a year in federal prison for employing people in the United States illegally.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says 35-year-old Ji Duan Fang of Hanahan was sentenced Monday for failing to pay employment taxes and harboring people who are in the country illegally.
Fang operated Jade China Buffet, a restaurant in North Charleston. He previously pleaded guilty to knowingly hiring at least 14 people in the country illegally. Prosecutors said from 2008 through 2011 Fang paid those employees in cash and did not collect or pay employment taxes for them, resulting in more than $200,000 in unpaid taxes.
The government said Fang also harbored and transported the workers to and from his restaurant.
