TEGA CAY, S.C. -- A $30 million wellness-based senior living community will be built in Tega Cay and will bring 130 new jobs with it.
It’s called Wellmore and will be located near the Walmart on Stonecrest Boulevard, and the average salary of those jobs will be $38,000 per year.
David Erb regularly runs trails in Tega Cay, and at 63, staying healthy is a top priority. He's not sure how aging will affect him.
"There are a lot of retired people here,” Erb said. "You're looking for a quality of life.”
If he needs help, he wants it close to home.
"You don't have those facilities around,” he said.
Charlotte-based Senior Living Communities said Monday it is capitalizing on that need in and around Tega Cay.
The company says Wellmore will focus on assisted living, Alzheimer’s care and skilled nursing. The average age of the 150 residents will be 83 years old.
"We believe anybody at any age and any condition can actually get better,” said Senior Living Communities CEO Donald Thompson.
Thompson says Wellmore will create 130 new jobs in healthcare, management and grounds upkeep.
He says he would love to build this type of project in North Carolina as well, but says the states are completely different when it comes to getting approval.
"We'd build in North Carolina in four seconds flat if we could get the correct certificates of need. It's just they take two to three years to process and it just isn't working,” Thompson said.
Thompson says he can get a certificate of need in South Carolina in six months.
Senior Living Communities is building four Wellmore model facilities in South Carolina in the next two years that will add about 500 total jobs in South Carolina.
Construction on Wellmore is scheduled to start this summer and open in January of 2014.
Senior Living Communities plans to start hiring for the Tega Cay location in the summer of 2013.
