STATESVILLE, N.C. – Ohio-based Commercial Vehicles Group announced plans to lay off about half of its 225 employees at its Statesville plant on Salisbury road starting this May.
“We are offering our staff retention bonuses,” said company spokesperson John Hyre on the phone Tuesday afternoon. Hyre also said that some of those faced with being laid off will be given a chance to seek other opportunities within the company.
A company spokesperson said that it is making the move to be more cost effective and plans to move closer to its clients.
CVG makes component parts such as seat systems and door panels for commercial trucks. The effects of the layoffs will have crippling effects on not just the 100 people who will be out of work, but the Statesville community as a whole.
One business that has already seen the effects of what plant closings and layoffs can do is East Side Billiards.
Lauren Wilhelm is the manager at the pool hall and said that he has seen the effects of all the plants closings and layoffs in the area.
“It’s really beginning to get bleak,” Wilhelm said. “How much longer is going to be before it affects me and I close?”
