CHARLOTTE, N.C. – US Airways flight attendants took another step toward allowing a strike during a union vote on Tuesday afternoon.
The Association of Flight Attendants says attendants voted by a 94 percent margin to authorize the strike. The vote by the union is a sign of confidence by workers, essentially saying they are in the negotiation for the long haul.
Flight attendants picketed last week at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and in other cities as they continue to seek a better contract offer from the airline.
US Airways 6,700 flight attendants have rejected contract offers from US Airways twice this year. Most recently, in September, they rejected the airline’s latest offer by a vote of 51 to 49 percent.
The flight attendants haven’t had a joint contract since the airline merged with America West in 2005.
US Airways released a statement soon after the announcement:
“The National Mediation Board has not released the union to strike and therefore there will be no operational or flight disruptions during the holiday travel season. The union has told our flight attendants that the strike vote is about positioning at the bargaining table and not about striking and the union has not requested that the National Mediation Board cease the mediation and negotiations process.
US Airways to add Charlotte-London flights
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- US Airways Group Inc. said on Tuesday that it has won permission to fly from its hub in Charlotte, N.C., to London's Heathrow airport.
US Airways plans to begin the flight in March using Airbus A330s.
Right now, US Airways flies from Charlotte to London's Gatwick airport, but business travelers generally prefer Heathrow. A US Airways spokesman said the airline hasn't decided what it will do with the current Charlotte-Gatwick flight.
The new route is in addition to the Philadelphia-to-Heathrow service the airline currently offers.
Shares of the Tempe, Ariz.-based airline rose 38 cents, or 3.2 percent, to $12.45 on Tuesday. Its shares have ranged in a 52-week range of $3.96 to $14.51.
