Contractor: 'I got caught financially, got behind'
MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. -- The home improvement contractor accused of cheating people out of their money breaks his silence to NewsChannel 36.
"Of course I'm a good guy," said Randy Briel."I got caught financially, got behind."
Briel would only talk to NewsChannel 36 over the phone.
Reporter: "A lot of people say you are a con artist. Are you stealing people's money?"
There are 37 complaints filed against Briel with the Better Business Bureau of the Southern Piedmont.Briel's customers have complained the contractor doesn't finish the work but keeps their money.
NewsChannel 36 exposed the allegations Friday when we spoke with Bill Hayes, an alleged victim.
"He'll come in and do half of it then ask for the other half of the money and you never see him again," said Hayes.
After our initial story aired, Hayes says he got text messages from Briel. The contractor sent workers to finish the job that had started in March.
"The best thing that I can do to help people is finish up whatever I need to finish up on," Briel told us."I'm not staying in the business any longer.I'm just trying to finish what I'm working on."
Briel has a criminal record for cheating people out of money in Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
He's a wanted man in Lincoln County.
Reporter:"What's going on?"
Briel:"Just running behind. Where's Lincoln County at?"
Reporter:"'Obtaining property under false pretenses,' I figured you would know something about it?No?"
Briel:"No sir.I don't think we've ever done a job out of Lincoln County."
Reporter: "Will you be giving people money back?"
Briel:"Whichever, it's either finish the work or refund what wasn't done."
When we visited Briel's last known address in Union County, we were told he was just recently evicted for not paying the rent.
