CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Local products and local food. That's the promise of the 7th Street Public Market in Uptown.
Just over a year old, the market has new management and hopes of building even more small businesses in the Queen City.
It's lunch time at the 7th Street Public Market. Tyson Bristch works Uptown and loves the lunch special at Bonsai Fusion sushi.
"I definitely try to eat local whenever I can. I would prefer to support local business start-ups," said Bristch.
Start up businesses is what the market is all about, only open a year so far, from wine to meat and much more in between, city officials say it's boosting the local economy and giving hopeful entrepreneurs a venue to begin.
"It's about local businesses: local products, locally grown. So we try to incubate new businesses-- we subsidize rent, we help people get started off the ground," said Robert Krumbine with Center City Partners.
"It's been a great opportunity for me," said James Yoder who owns the "Not Just Coffee" bar which is a staple in the market that's been here since the beginning.
"By having shared overhead with all these different vendors it has really given us a chance to grow the business and things have been going really well for us," said Yoder.
And they're hoping it gets even better. The city hired former Belk VP, Michael Restaino to maximize the market's growth potential.
"It's a great time to bring in somebody who has that retail expertise, somebody who can take the vision and go further into the future," said Krumbine.
Good news for the businesses already invested and locals who want to see the new hidden gem flourish.
“I think a lot of people when Reid's left the building didn't realize all this new stuff was here, so it's sort of just getting the word out," said Bristch.
