CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- They are the new household items -- smart phones, iPads,  iPhones.  But do you know how to use them?  Are you getting the most out of that expensive phone?

Baiju Patel believes he is.

“I’m actually looking where my next meeting will be, which is Starbucks,” he said.  “I used GPS to navigate over here."

Patel is a smartphone super user.  So is Kathleen Ploof.

“I use it constantly,” she said.  “I had to copy and paste something and I’ve never done it before on my phone.  I finally figured it out."

But for people who can’t figure out their devices on their own, there are classes to help.  Verizon offers them weekly in the Charlotte area.

“No matter where you are if you hit the home key you'll always go back,” said an instructor at the Arboretum Verizon store during a recent Saturday class.

His class was full, and a Verizon spokesperson says all the sessions fill fast.  They’ve increased the number of classes to accommodate the need.

Apple also offers in-store classes and one-on-one training.

NBC Charlotte reached out to AT&T.  The company does not offer classes, but a representative said their salespeople will work individually with customers who need help with their phones and devices.
