CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- You could win cash at SouthPark Mall this holiday season while you're inside shopping.
The mall is partnering with police to start a new crime-fighting program that rewards you for locking your car doors and keeping valuables out of plain sight. It's called Crime Free Cash for Christmas.
"Out of the number of people who've done a great job and made themselves a hard target, we'll do a drawing every two weeks, and from the merchants in the mall, these people will get prizes," said Randy Thomas, general manager of the mall.
Mall security and police officers will inspect cars and write down the license plates of vehicles that have no valuables visible inside. Those license plates will then be entered into a drawing for prizes.
For now, the program is only running through the holiday season.
"Who knows? If it's successful, we'll keep this up," Thomas.
