Dream Day: Giving back to a constant giver

Mara Campolungo is Co-founder of The Sandbox, an organization comprised of dedicated community members, from all backgrounds and ages, who are united by a desire to make a difference and directly impact the lives of families whose child has cancer or life altering illness.

“364 Days out of the year she gives and this was her one day to a, to give back,” said Ashley Davis, as he spoke about his Co-worker Mara Campolungo, a winner of “DreamDay,” a new series on NBC Charlotte.

Mara is the Co-founder of The Sandbox, an organization comprised of dedicated community members, from all backgrounds and ages, who are united by a desire to make a difference and directly impact the lives of families whose child has cancer or life altering illness.

Davis described Mara as one of the most positive spirits he has ever met.

“She is constantly networking, constantly talking to people about The Sandbox, constantly helping families. She is on the go 24/7. But sometimes you have to take a step back and recharge and take care of yourself," Davis explained.

"If Mara could have a Dream Day it would be something that would just allow her to relax, maybe spend some time with her husband Neil, and enjoy the day.”

Mara was surprised to meet NBC Charlotte’s Beth Troutman, and learn that she was chosen for NBC Charlotte’s Dream Day.

“I think it was the first time in my life I was completely speechless. I was completely shocked, I… I simply had no idea,” Mara said.

For Mara’s Dream Day, an SUV drove her to the Ritz Carlton in Uptown Charlotte for a spa day, so she could take some time for herself.

She was treated to a manicure, pedicure, massage and some pool time relaxation with her husband.

“There could not have been a better surprise than having Neil share in this special day because he’s been my constant encourager. He is just my best friend as well as being an amazing husband. So I was completely, completely and totally surprised.”

After leaving the hotel Mara went to Reid's Fine Foods in Southpark, where her colleagues and the board members of The Sandbox awaited her arrival for a reception and celebration.

“For as much as you do for everybody else, now you get to see what it feels like to be taken care of,” one of her colleagues said.
