Crime scene tape surrounded the Minor home in Wesley Chapel Wednesday.

WESLEY CHAPEL -- A recording was released Thursday of the 911 call Grace Minor made seconds after her two sons were allegedly shot by their own father. Both boys were hospitalized as a result of the shooting.

Thursday morning Ryan Minor died at the hospital. His brother Ross is still clinging to life.

Also released Thursday, a search warrant reveals that the alleged shooter, Mark Minor, made a last minute plea to his wife, asking her not to leave him.

The documents reveal that Mark Minor had not slept Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning because he was worried about a pending separation with his wife, Grace.

Moments after Mark made his final plea, Grace heard gunshots and rushed upstairs. According to the search warrant, Grace found her husband holding a gun, and her two boys in bed, critically wounded.

Then Mark turned the gun on himself.

In the 911 call, Grace reportedly pleads for assistance in the aftermath of the shooting.

"It's incomprehensible to me that this happened," said Union County Sheriff, Eddie Cathey.

Many in the south Charlotte community gathered to pray for the Minor family Thursday night. The vigil was held at St. Matthew’s Church where members gathered just a few months for the family of the murdered 5-year-old Crespi twins.

"As you are aware, the oldest child Ryan passed away this morning and our thoughts and prayers of course are with him. It's difficult for any community, whether it's a faith community or education community to deal with this,” said Antoinette Usher, who attended the vigil at St. Matthew’s.

A statement released by the family Thursday expressed gratitude for the community’s support and prayers for Ross’s recovery. The family also requested the right to mourn privately.

10-year-old shooting victim dies

WESLEY CHAPEL -- A 10-year-old boy allegedly shot by his father while sleeping Wednesday morning has died, a hospital spokesperson confirmed.

Ryan Minor died Thursday morning at Carolinas Medical Center, the spokesperson said.  His 8-year-old brother Ross, who was also allegedly shot by their father, received life threatening injuries. At the request of his family, his condition is not known at this time.

Mark Minor, 44, the boy's father, shot his children while they were in their bed sleeping, deputies said. Minor then shot himself and died at the scene, deputies said.

Neighbors of the small Wesley Chapel community are stunned by the news of the shooting, but not necessarily surprised that the crime involved a gun. Minor once showed a collection of more than 100 firearms to neighbors.

"He said he always carried a pistol around with him wherever he went," said neighbor Colin Bennett.

They said Minor sometimes didn’t follow homeowner association rules. They said sometimes he rode his all terrain vehicle where he wasn't allowed and fired guns in nearby woods close to neighbor's homes where kids played.

Minor worked for the city of Monroe as a service technician with the natural gas department. The city had recently promoted him to a new position that he was supposed to start in two weeks. Minor had recently spoken of problems at home to his boss, according to the Associated Press.

Sources said the couple had marital problems but are not sure if they were getting a divorce.

Some of Minor's neighbors said he loved his children and was constantly playing with them outside.

"We'll never understand why it happened, but we'll try to do the best we can," said Union County Sheriff Eddie Cathey. "It's in God's hands and the doctor's now."

The boy's mother, Grace Minor, was downstairs when the shootings happened, according to neighbors. She was the one who made the 911 call.

Two brothers shot by father, deputies say

WESLEY CHAPEL, NC -- The two boys were asleep in their beds Wednesday morning when they were shot by their father, who then apparently turned the gun on himself, the Union County Sheriff said.

Dispatch received a 911 call around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday from a woman who lives in the home on Pumpernickel Lane in the Price Mill neighborhood. She said she was downstairs when she heard gunshots coming from upstairs.

When deputies arrived at the home they found Ross, 8, and Ryan, 10, shot in separate bedrooms. The father, Mark Minor, 44, was found dead in a third bedroom from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound, Sheriff Eddie Cathey said.

Ross and Ryan Minor were transported with life threatening injuries to Carolinas Medical Center. Their mother was not injured and was taken to CMC in a deputy’s car.

Investigators talked to the mother, but Cathey said it is not clear what lead to the gunfire.

“We’ll never understand why it happened, but we’ll try to do the best that we can to figure out what did happen,” Cathey said.

Investigators searched the family's home Wednesday for clues to what may have led to the shooting.

Sources told 6NEWS the couple might have been experiencing marital problems, but could not confirm if a divorce was in the works. Deputies are also looking to find out if Minor had any kind of mental illness.

Investigators are reviewing the mother’s 911 call and they don’t believe she was involved in the shooting.

One man who lives in Prince Mill said the neighborhood of 80 homes has only been around for five years. Most of the residents know the Minor family and they’re very shaken by the shooting. The sheriff said no one will ever know why a parent would do this.

“It’s a shock to us as it is anybody,” Cathey said.

Investigators believe two weapons, both handguns, were used in the shooting. They found several weapons inside the home, but the sheriff said that is not unusual for an avid hunter.

The crime scene was difficult to deal with for deputies, Cathey said, because it involved children.

"They are struggling to deal with this," Cathey said. "This is very traumatic for any officer because you reflect on your own families."

Minor worked for the City of Monroe's natural gas department. He was recently promoted to energy service manager and was scheduled to start the new position a week from Monday.

Neighbors describe father as a "Rambo" type of guy

6NEWS was one of the first news crews on the scene of the shooting. Investigator Mark Boone spent the day gathering more information about the father and his two sons.

A few neighbors have described Minor as a “Rambo” character. He was a muscular, physically fit guy who was also an avid hunter.

He would often take his two sons on all-terrain vehicles on trails behind the family's home. They said he lead a very active lifestyle, one that was suddenly shattered by gunfire.

Friends said Minor worked out at the Monroe Aquatics Center nearly every day. And in Minor's Wesley Chapel subdivision, neighbors said Minor was a handyman who mowed lawns, did electrical work, and made other repairs.

Investigators spent most of the day Wednesday at the Minor home.

Roseann Bateman never met Minor, but she knew his two children. They went to Wesley Chapel Elementary for the 2004-2005 school year. Bateman is the school’s principal. It was there that Minor’s oldest son made the biggest impression on her.

“He was very quiet, but had this wonderful smile. The kind that you remember because it sort of lights up a room,” Bateman said.

Now neighbors are left wondering if there was a dark side of Minor. The avid hunter was once warned by the homeowner's association about shooting too close to homes.

“He said he always carried a pistol around with him everywhere he went, I mean that's obviously not the nature of a normal man,” said neighbor Colin Bennett.

The 6NEWS investigators did not find an arrest record in the Carolinas for Minor. The sheriff said he knows of no other time when deputies were called to the family's home.

Even less is known about the children's mother, Grace Minor. Sources told 6NEWS she is a former junior Olympian, originally from Rhode Island, who works full-time in finance. Police did not confirm where she was employed.

6NEWS reporters Glenn Counts, Mark Boone, Nicole Konkal and Tony Burbeck contributed to this report.
