CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a 10-year-old boy who attended Providence Day School died after a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday morning.
The shooting happened Wednesday morning at a home in the 4600 block of Connecting Road near South Boulevard in Charlotte.
A CMPD source told NBC Charlotte that the father and 12-year-old sister were at home during the time of the shooting. The father was in the shower during the shooting.
The boy shot himself in the head, according to the source.
A next-door neighbor who did not want to be identified said, "He was such a smart kid. I can't believe what happened to him."
Another neighbor said with tears in her eyes, "They were so nice. They once went over and picked up the leaves from a (vacant) house over there just to be nice."
Police spent the day on the scene investigating, but have not released anymore details on the incident.
At Providence Day School several students were visibly upset and one even broke down and cried as she spoke to a front office person.
Friends of the family say they haven't finalized funeral arrangements as of yet.
