CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A 15-year-old East Mecklenburg High School student was charged after school officials said a staff member was injured during a fight Monday.
According to East Meck principal Rich Parker, a message was sent to parents Monday, telling them a staff member was hurt during the incident.
Students gathered around the fight, yelling and recording the violent fight on their phones. Later, it was posted to the social media platform Instagram.
Parker told parents, “The injury is not serious as we know right now, and the students involved will be punished in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct.”
This type of high school drama has been seen before at East Meck. According to the North Carolina school report card, there were two assaults on staff members at the school last year. And 2016 saw a near five-percent increase of assaults on staff from a year prior, with a total of 57 assaults reported statewide.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the student, only identified as a 15-year-old female, was charged with assault on school personnel.
The East Meck staff member has not been identified.
