CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a witness’ tip enabled them to arrest two men in connection with an armed robbery and assault last week in northeast Charlotte.

Officers say a man who had just purchased a money order at a check cashing establishment was walking home about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, when someone pulled up in a grey car in the 6400 block of The Plaza. Two men got out of the car, grabbed the man, and demanded money at gunpoint.

The attackers went through the victim’s pockets and robbed him, and then one man struck the victim in the heat with a baseball bat.

The attackers got back in the car and drove off, but a witness got the license tag number of the vehicle and told police. That led to Tuesday’s arrest of two 19-year-olds -- Laquentin Winchester and Curry Evans.

Each man was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Winchester also was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
