CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- The Catawba County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday the arrests of two locally-wanted sex offenders arrested out of state.
Bobby Ray Smith, 60, fled to Atlantic County, New Jersey, to escape a court date in August for habitual felon and felony violations of sex offender laws, officials say.
The Catawba County Sheriff's Office says Smith has a long criminal history, including convictions for murder, indecent liberties with a minor, breaking and entering and prison escape.
Smith will be extradited to Catawba County once he faces his charges in Atlantic County. Additionally, authorities say Smith has pending felony charges in Iredell County.
Randy Harold Scronce, 52, a convicted sex offender, was captured by U.S. Marshals in Kentucky.
Scronce was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a child in 2011. Upon his conviction, Scronce was ordered to register as a sex offender. Instead of registering, the Catawba County Sheriff's Office says Scronce fled the state.
Scronce has already been extradited to Catawba County and is awaiting trial.
