GASTONIA, N.C. – A man is in custody after Gastonia Police said he shot three people, including a young boy, at an apartment complex on Saturday afternoon.
Police said two of the victims, including the boy, were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A third man was treated and released at the scene.
Officers arrested Pontus Joel Adams for the shootings and charged with three counts of attempted murder.
The shooting occurred just after 2 p.m. at Quail Woods Apartments off Robinwood Lane. Police said the shooter attempted to flee, but he got into a car crash outside the apartment complex.
Resident Allan Springs said he happened to open his door to help one of the victims right as the gunman was walking past him.
"You just freeze up. There's nothing you can do," Springs said. "I'm coming outside to help the man laying on the ground. He's moaning and stuff. I want to help him, but [the gunman is] walking back and forth with a rifle."
Neighbor Christopher Stonger said one of Adams' bullets came flying through his wall and missed him.
"It's a little crazy to think because it really was just a couple feet away from me," he said.
Detectives are still investigating, and they haven't yet released a motive.
Adams' first court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon at the Gaston County Courthouse.
