BOONE, N.C. -- An Appalachian State University student is accused of striking an elderly man in a Boone Walmart.

Police arrived at the store on Watauga Village Drive around 8 p.m. Monday for an assault investigation.

Witnesses tell officers Diogenes Gabriel Morales, 21, jumped into a bin in the store, then hit the man in the face. Surveillance cameras also captured the incident.

Police arrested the suspect outside of the store.

“ASU students are such a big part of this community, and this type of behavior is uncharacteristic. We are shocked that a 21 year old ASU student would do such a thing”, said Chief Dana Crawford. “We are currently working with university officials to address this problem and to determine the motivation behind this attack.”

Morales is charged with simple physical assault and resisting arrest.
