CLOVER, S.C. -- The York County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday evening following an altercation between cousins.
Authorities say Michael Eugene Lanier went to pick up his cousin, Anthony Scott Howe from the Mustang gas station around 8 o'clock Saturday.
Lanier found his cousin instead at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store.
Officials say the altercation between Lanier and Howe began when Lanier reportedly refused to give Howe's girlfriend a ride. That's when, according to the case report, Howe threatened to beat up Lanier's girlfriend, and began hitting Lanier in the face and head while Lanier drove, and also threw his cellphone at his head.
The report continues that Lanier grabbed his 30/30 from the backseat, and a struggle for control of the weapon ensued. Eventually, Lanier aimed low and fired a shot, striking Howe in the leg, the report states.
Then, Lanier's truck struck a fence on Highway 321 and came to a stop.
Lanier attempted to call 911, according to officials, but the phone was not operational. Lanier then flagged down a passing Piedmont EMS unit, who stopped to help and called the York County Sheriff's Office.
Both Howe and Lanier's injuries were documented by authorities.
Both Howe and Lanier are charged with one count of first-degree assault and battery.
The case remains under investigation.
