LANCASTER, S.C. -- A Lancaster man is accused of using an ax during an attempted robbery at a restaurant Wednesday morning.

Leroy Deese was charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime after he tried to rob Rusty's Grill with an ax around 5:30 a.m., according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Leroy entered the grill off of Pineview Drive with an ax and demanded money. The owner of the grill grabbed a gun and challenged Deese.  Deese began apologizing, told the owner he was on drugs and fled the scene.

Deese was located a short time later several streets away from the scene by a patrol deputy, according to the report.

Deese is currently being held at the Lancaster County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
