CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two suspects were found hiding within a Charlotte elementary school during a breaking and entering investigation, according to police.

CMPD officers responded to Sterling Elementary School on China Grove Road for a sounding alarm on just before 1 a.m. Friday.

Officers and a K-9 unit searched the area until found Christopher Parks 19, and Jordan Matthews, 22, inside of the school, according to police.

Investigators believe the suspects were trying to steal money collected in a school-wide fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The kindergarten class that collected the most money in the Pasta for Pennies fundraiser was set to receive a pasta part from the Olive Garden. The school fears the class may lose or delay the party.

While in the building, police say the suspects also did significant damage.

Both men are charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny and more. They are in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

A third suspect ran from the scene. Anyone with additional information should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
