CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are still looking for more information about a gruesome home burglary in north Charlotte Sunday.
Toya Davis was out of town at a funeral when a neighbor called police after noticing her back door was open. Officers said that when they arrived, the house was ransacked and the burglars appeared to have come in through a bathroom window.
Thousands of dollars worth of electronics were stolen but police also found the body of Davis' 8-year-old cocker spaniel, Shadow, in a back bedroom. The thieves had bludgeoned the dog to death with a hammer.
Davis said that the crooks left the hammer and baseball bat at her house. She added that police were able to lift fingerprints and bloody footprints for evidence.
At this time the crime appears to be random.
