BURKE COUNTY, N.C. – A high school teacher in Burke County has been charged with sexual assaulting a student.
East Burke High School social studies teacher Tracy Hefner, 42, was charged with second-degree sexual assault on Monday.
The alleged incident involved a student and took place outside of school property. Deputies say the incident was with a male student.
Hefner also serves as an athletic trainer at the school, according to the school district.
"He was pretty cool, everybody loved him. I don't see how it happened, said student Dillon Bryant. "I had back problems my sophomore year and when I was a senior he (did) electrodes down my back, all kinds of stuff. I never had any problems with him--never."
A Burke County sheriff’s deputy notified the school of the investigation on Monday and Hefner is suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
Parents will receive a call Tuesday night explaining the arrest and charges, and extra counselors will be on hand at the school, the district said.
"In this situation he would have directly overseen this particular student," said Sheriff Steve Whisenant. "Just the history of dealing with these type cases many times there are more victims."
Hefner has worked at the school since 1993. He is set to appear in court on Tuesday and is being held on a $100,000 secured bond.
