CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An alleged robber was shot and killed by the victim in a shootout Friday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.
CMPD responded to a shooting call at the Pinetree Apartments in the 7900 block of Antlers Lane around 10 p.m. First responders say they saw a large amount of blood and shell casings on the scene but could not find a victim.
Officers later discovered that Omari Aiken, 21, was driven to Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville by a friend, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting occurred during a robbery, according to police. Investigators say Aiken and 32-year-old Duran Rozzelle went to the apartment complex to rob three other men. Two of them fled, but the third victim was not able to escape. Police say Aiken and Rozzelle then assaulted the third person.
Antonio Maldonado, 39, was one of the two robbery victims who ran. Police say Maldonado returned to the scene with a gun to help the third man. Both groups exchanged gunfire, resulting in Aiken’s death.
The third man Aiken and Rozzelle allegedly assaulted suffered minor injuries.
Rozzelle was hospitalized for a gunshot wound but his injuries are not life-threatening. He has been charged with attempted armed robbery.
At this time, Maldonado is not being charged.
