UNION COUNTY, N.C. – Authorities say a Union County couple working paper route stole from customers.
A lot of people associate a paper route with a bit of nostalgia, but not Charles Bowers 38, or his 32-year-old wife Amanda according to Union County Sheriff’s Deputies.
The couple has been arrested for a series of burglaries. "It's an invasion of privacy, it kind of shatters your confidence a little bit," said Cathy O’Brien a victim.
All of the victims share one thing in common; deputies say they had newspaper subscriptions and temporarily stopped delivery when they went out of town.
The couple worked paper routes for the Observer and Enquirer Journal and had access to the list.
"These folks would then know who wasn’t home and would enter homes and remove items," said Investigator Andrew Mullis with the Sheriff’s Department.
"This is something we've been working on for probably for the last year to year and a half. We knew there was a connection and were just able to recently put all the dots together."
Deputies say the couple may have hit as many as 20 homes, some in the Wesley Chapel area like O’Brien’s home.
"We were fortunate that we didn't lose anything really big, but we lost enough that you still miss it I'm still looking for things but I’m very glad they have been caught because it makes you very mad," said O’Brien.
