ASHE COUNTY, N.C. -- Deputies from the Ashe County Sheriff's Office shot and killed a man Monday night.
Deputies said they were called to a home off of Gaither Poe Road after a man was seen shooting a rifle from his home.
Upon arriving on scene, deputies say 47-year-old Walter Mark Houck was holding with a rifle, and ordered him to put down the weapon. The man refused to listen, and began pointing the gun at the officers, according to the police report.
Deputies fired at Houck, hitting and killing him, officials said.
Two officers from the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office and one officer from the West Jefferson Police Department have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the completion of the investigation being conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation.
Ashe County Sheriff James Williams says he has complete confidence in his officers' ability, and is satisfied they followed department policy and training protocal.
Sheriff Williams further stated this his heart goes out to the victim's family as well as to the officers and departments involved.
