DENVER, N.C. -- Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies exchanged gunfire with a man they say attempted to rob a pharmacy while wielding a shotgun.
Just before 3 on Thursday afternoon, officials say the 26-year-old male suspect entered the CVS Pharmacy on Webb's Road in Denver carrying a shotgun.
Authorities say the man, identified as Tyler Kennedy, jumped over the counter and demanded money. He wasn't able to get any and fled the store.
Deputies caught up with the suspect, who was driving a gray Toyota Tundra pickup truck, as he turned from Webb's Road onto Burton Lane.
Then, according to the Sheriff's Office, the man pulled into a grassy area near the Little Creek Access on Lake Norman and exited his vehicle on the side nearest the lake.
Deputies began surrounding the suspect, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, prompting the suspect to fire five shots, two of which were in the direction of officers.
When deputies returned fire, the suspect was struck in the lower body, disabling him.
