FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Deputy Police Chief Harold Medlock is the new chief of police in Fayetteville.

Medlock was formally introduced as the new chief as a news conference Wednesday.

Medlock said he intends to start working in Fayetteville on Feb. 18, adding that he has some administrative work to finish related to last September's Democratic National Convention. He said he also has some other projects he'd like to work on before leaving Charlotte.

Former Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine retired last summer, months after his department was accused of racial profiling. Katherine Bryant served as interim chief.

Medlock first joined Charlotte-Mecklenburg police as an officer in 1979. His biography on the department's website said he worked briefly in the private sector before rejoining CMPD in 1993, where he's served in multiple roles.
