FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy from Fayetteville is dead after police say he got hold of a loaded gun kept in his home.
A statement issued Saturday by the Fayetteville Police Department says officers responded a 10:43 to a home following a report that a child had been shot. Emergency medical personnel also responded to the scene but efforts to save Killian Perez were unsuccessful.
Authorities said the boy located and retrieved a handgun that was loaded and stored on the top of a refrigerator. The child was able to manipulate the handgun and shot himself.
Jeffery David Perez, 32, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to secure a firearm. Officials said Perez is a soldier in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Bragg.
