GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A Greenville police officer has been fired after his arrest on a stalking charge last month.
The police department said Friday that 58-year-old Carlos Melgar has been fired following an internal investigation of the allegations against him.
The department says the firing was effective Dec. 19.
Melgar had been arrested Nov. 26 on a charge of misdemeanor stalking. Investigators said he misused police records and database information to identify and meet a woman.
Melgar had been suspected when he was arrested.
Police Chief Hassan Aden said Melgar had been with the department four years.
He is to appear in court Feb. 7.
