HICKORY, N.C. -- Hickory police have arrested a man who led them on a chase with a stolen vehicle and shot at officers Tuesday night.
Police said James Brandon Smith stole a Jeep Cherokee from the Raceway Gas Station on Highway 321 around 9 p.m. The victim told police his vehicle, with a Springfield Arms .9mm gun on the console, was taken while he was in the gas station.
Officers were able to locate the Jeep near Civitan Park, but Smith refused to pullover, police said.
A few moments after the chase, officers tracked down the running vehicle in a wooded area in the 400 block of 17th Avenue Northeast near Hickory High School.
After finding the Jeep, police began to track the suspect with a K-9. Smith then fired multiple shots at the officers while they retreated, police said.
Police continued to search for Smith during the overnight hours. He was taken into custody by the Hickory Police SWAT Team around 7 a.m.
Smith is charged with six felonies, including assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer. Also, the Associated Press reports 34-year-old Erin Olivia Shell, of Hickory, is charged with felony aiding and abetting and misdemeanor driving with a revoked license.
