MONROE, N.C. -- A Union County jury Thursday convicted a Monroe man of first-degree murder for fatally stabbing an Anson County Elementary teacher.
Lamata Sherron Anderson was sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering Yolanda Simon in front of her six-year-old daughter in February 2010, prosecutors said.
At trial prosecutors alleged that Anderson took a knife from his Crooked Creek Court home, walked across the street to the house of Yolanda Simon and stabbed her multiple times when she opened the door.
Anderson unsuccessfully attempted to convince the jury that he was insane at the time of the murder.
The jury deliberated less than two hours before reaching their verdict.
