LANCASTER, S.C. -- A man was accidentally killed while buying the handgun that shot him, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting victim around 8 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.
Police say Robert Hood, 35, was driven to the hospital for a gunshot wound. He died shortly after arriving.
Hood was at his home on South Avenue at the time of the shooting. According to investigators, he was meeting with 30-year-old Demario Buchanon about a gun. Detectives say the men where handling the weapon when it fired, striking Hood in the abdomen.
Police call this an accidental shooting, but both Hood and Buchanon are prohibited from owning a firearm. Deputies found the gun hidden near the scene after shooting and say it was determined to be stolen.
Buchanon has been arrested and charged with unlawful possession of handgun and possession of stolen property.
