KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Police are searching for a man who they say tried to kidnap an employee of the Food Lion store at 2825 North Cannon Boulevard in Kannapolis.

It happened Thursday night when the female employee was helping to load groceries into a car for a man who appeared to be about 65 years old.

She had wheeled his cart out to the parking lot and when they got to his car, police said he suddenly grabbed her and tried to push her into his car.

Investigators said the woman was able to break free and she ran back into the store and called police.

The man was said to be wearing a black suit and was driving a gold Buick with duct tape on the passenger side mirror.

In a statement, a Food Lion spokesperson would not discuss the incident but said, "The safety of our customers and employees is our utmost concern.  We are cooperating with police in hopes of apprehending a suspect."

Tim Self and his two children said as they were heading into the store Friday night, "The world is going crazy.  Everything happening in Boston.  It is nuts out here."

In a nail salon next door, Karen Stamey said, "You need to be very protective of where you are and your surroundings."

If anyone has any information they are asked to call Cabarrus Crime Stoppers at 704-932-7463.
