LONG VIEW, N.C. – The man accused of intentionally scalding a toddler and his 3-year-old sister appeared in court Monday afternoon.

William Lail, 25, is charged with murder for the death of his girlfriend's 20-month-old son, Jaydon Ray Sandlin, and faces two felony counts of child abuse for the injuries to the toddler's 3-year-old sister, Kylie. Additionally, Lail is charged with violating his probation.

Lail's court-appointed attorney requested a continuance. Lail's next court appearance will be May 17.

According to arrest warrants, last Friday, Lail intentionally scalded Jaydon on the buttocks and on the back of both of the boy's legs. Official documents state Lail also scalded 3-year-old Kylie on her head, shoulders, legs and feet.

"Excessive water" came from Jaydon's mouth and nose as Lail attempted to perform CPR on the naked, unconscious toddler, according to a search warrant posted on the door of the childrens' Catawba County home.

The search warrant also noted a witness' observation that Jaydon suffered burns on his body and bruising on his forehead.

Lail, the boyfriend of the childrens' mother, was watching the kids while the mother was away from the home.

Lail was booked into the Catawba County Detention Center with bonds totaling $100,000; no bond was assigned to the murder charge.

In addition to Lail's court appearance on Monday, jail records show he was scheduled to appear in court this month for failure to report an accident and resisting a public officer, stemming from a case in 2011
