WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- A man in Winston-Salem has pleaded guilty in the shooting death of another man more than a year ago.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported (http://bit.ly/VDnwiL) that 36-year-old Shanta Shamell Pitts pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of 47-year-old Derrick Hasten Russell of Winston-Salem in November, 2011.
Forsyth Superior Court Judge Edwin Wilson sentenced Pitts to between 12 years and 15 years in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Martin said Russell was angry that Pitts had an affair with Russell's estranged wife
Martin says the men began threatening each other in text messages and over the phone until Pitts drove to Russell's apartment. Martin says Pitts shot Russell six times. Pitts told police he was defending himself, saying Russell appeared to be reaching for a gun.
