CONOVER, N.C. -- While performing a welfare check, police say they stumbled upon an operational meth lab in Conover on Saturday night.

The resident of the home in the 200 block of Fifth Street Place Northeast, 42-year-old Carl William Pottschmidt III, was arrested and charged with manufacturing schedule II controlled substance.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Conover Fire Department and Catawba County EMS assisted the Conover Police Department.

Pottschmidt is currently held in the Catawba County Detention Center on a $40,000 bond.

The NC SBI and Conover Police Department are still investigating to identify any other potentially involved individuals.
