MONROE, N.C. -- A Monroe man faces felony charges for allegedly embezzling nearly $900,000 over six years from his former employer Boggs Paving, according to Monroe police.

Juan Pablo Guarda, 39, was arrested on Nov. 29 on charges of obtaining property by false pretenses, larceny by employees and conspiracy to commit a felony. A police report says Guarda stole $888,680 in money and $1,745 in building materials from the company.

On the same day as Guarda’s arrest, Boggs Paving also filed civil suit against the former project manager for the company, for money owed.

Boggs Paving officials discovered the alleged embezzlement because of “a system of financial checks and balances” at the company, according to a news release from Boggs Paving. The company took that discovery to the Monroe Police Department and Union County District Attorney’s Office, which began an investigation, the release said.

Attempts late Tuesday to reach the Monroe police detective investigating the case were unsuccessful.

“As we move forward, we are reviewing how this crime happened and are taking appropriate steps to establish even stronger safeguards to ensure something like this never happens again,” company CEO Drew Boggs said in a statement.

Guarda was in the Union County Jail Tuesday night, records show, held on $1 million secure bond. He has a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday at the Union County Courthouse.

Boggs Paving has more than 400 employees and is based in Monroe.
