MORGANTON, N.C. – A Morganton man is accused of shooting at and then setting fire to his neighbor’s home earlier this week.
According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Raymond Smart, 43, is accused of shooting at his neighbor’s house just yards away on Tuesday night and then trying to burn the home down nearly four hours later.
Police were called to a family’s home on Blue Ridge Ventures Road at 10:40 Tuesday night as a homeowner said he heard a gunshot while his family was inside the residence. Police found a bullet had entered the back of the home, went through bedroom and bathroom walls and out the front of the house.
At 2:27 a.m. officers were called back to the same home after Smart allegedly threw something against the house and started a fire, according to the police report.
Smart, who lives just a few houses down on the same Blue Ridge Ventures Road, was quickly identified as a suspect and was arrested Friday. He is charged with felony discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, and charges are pending in the arson incident.
No one was hurt in either incident, and the house sustained minimal damage from the fire.
Smart was arrested on a combined bond of $45,000. He is due in Burke County court on January 3. He was also arrested for a 2009 Caldwell County indictment of discharging a weapon into occupied property.
