MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. -- The suspect in the first Mount Holly murder of 2013 is now in custody.
Late Friday night, the Mount Holly Police Department responded to a home in the 300 block of Gaston Avenue for a welfare check.
Once on the scene, police and a family member entered the home and discovered the body of a Ashwin Kumar Vaghibhai Patel, 68. He died from a gunshot wound.
Mount Holly Police arrested Jiten Ashwin Patel, 28, and charged him with first-degree murder just hours after the warrant for his arrest was issued. The Mount Holly Police Chief says Patel is the son of the victim.
Patel was apprehended Saturday afternoon during a traffic stop in Gastonia.
"He (Patel) was considered to be armed and dangerous because he had a gun and used it... So, we need to get him off the streets," said David James, Mount Holly Police Chief, during a press conference Saturday morning before the arrest.
This is the first homicide of 2013 in Mount Holly.
The victim was a local business owner in Mount Holly; he owned a BP gas station on Highway 16, and his wife owned a laundromat on Woodlawn. The victim had lived in the house on Gaston for years with his wife and son.
The Mount Holly Police Department is leading the investigation.
